When do I need a structural engineer?
Any time a project changes how your building carries load: removing or altering a load-bearing wall, adding a storey or extension, underpinning a basement, cutting a new entrance or window opening, building a deck, porch, garage, or retaining wall, or repairing cracks and settlement. Most Ontario municipalities require sealed structural drawings before they will issue a building permit for this work.
